PLAZAS

Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico

Santiago de Queretaro is the capital of the state of Queretaro northwest of Mexico City, and it is also one of the birthplaces of the Mexican revolution.

The city is located about 150 kilometers north of Mexico City and 200 kilometers south of San Luis Potosi in the central Mexican highlands. The place was first settled by Otomi indians, in the 15th century they were absorbed into the Aztec empire, and the city was conquered by the invading Spaniards in 1531. It became an important logistical and transit center and served as a base for the Franciscans to send out missionaries to North and South America. Later Queretaro was the site of intrigue, with creole patriots plotting against Spanish rule, and meeting with Padre Hidalgo in the house of La Corregidora.

Looking Northwest in the Jardin Zenea or Plaza Principal

The Jardin Zenea is in the center of the historic district and it functions as the main plaza and the market square of the city. On the east side of the plaza is the Templo de San Francisco on the Calle 5 de Mayo, with a large tiled dome and a single massive tower on the northwest corner. On the west side of the plaza is the small, but impressive Teatro de la Republica, where in 1867 a tribunal decided to execute the emperor Maximilian. In the center of the garden there is a fine bandstand with a parabolic metal roof. Most of the garden is decorated with colorful plantings and a variety of trees.

Multi-colored Dome and Towers of the Church of Guadelupe

The Templo de Guadelupe stands 2 blocks east of the Plaza Principal, at the corner of Avenida Pasteur and Avenida 16 de Septiembre. The west facade of the church is flanked by 2 tall towers with square and octagonal pavilions topped by conical multi-colored tile roofs. The octagonal dome is also covered with colored tiles in red, green and white, the colors of the Mexican flag, and symbol of Mexican independence. Diagonally across the street from the church is a small trapezoidal plaza framed by red and yellow stucco facades and bougainvilla trees. In the center of the space there is a statue of a fat monk on a very fat pillar.
